The National Football League completed its college draft this past weekend with the professionals restocking their talent pool with young hopefuls hoping to carry their respective teams to next year’s Super Bowl. Has your investment portfolio been refreshed to help take you to Retirement Land?
A quick look at the performance of global equity markets in April sees a continuation of positive monthly returns, extending their gains from last October’s lows. On balance, stocks last month gained 1.25% with UK leading the pack up 3.1%. YTD, equities have increased 9.2% on average.
While stock prices continue to climb the proverbial “Wall of Worry”, we are starting to see that recent gains are once again beginning to be concentrated among an elite few. An early warning sign that could be signaling the rally is losing steam. Through the first quarter of year there has been about an equal number of stocks gaining versus losing in value. The key driver to the index’s overall outperformance has been outsized gains in a handful of well-known mega-cap names like Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon & Google. April witnessed a continuation of this trend. For equities to maintain their upward momentum, a broadening out-of-stock gains will soon be required.
Interestingly enough we see the same concentration of expectations in another Americana staple coming up in May, the Kentucky Derby. At present, of the 24 entrants, only two horses display winning odds in single digits. We don’t suggest taking investing cues from the race track but if a moderate long-shot at 22-1, Confidence Game, dons the roses next week, we may start feeling better about the investing outlook. Lol.
As the US corporate earnings season rounds the last turn, which to date results have been modestly better than expected, investors will begin to take direction from various intra-quarter macro events including US Congressional Budget/Debt ceiling discussions, Fed speak on interest rate direction, bank bailout developments, ongoing Russia/Ukraine progress and notably US GDP trends which recently downshifted in 1Q23 to 1.1%.
